Contest Policy Update

IMAC Contest Policy - standardization of IMAC discounts

Contest fee discounts have been a long standing and widely supported benefit of IMAC membership. In practice however, many events have ignored this fee structure to the detriment of the organization and its members.

The Contest Guide clearly states (Section C - Item 4) that for a contest to be considered a valid IMAC contest, a discount should be offered to IMAC members. This discount level was never established.

The opinion of this Board is that this policy and the resulting member benefit is too important to leave as is.  The board discussed many options at length including REQUIRING IMAC membership (for classes other than Basic) to participate in an IMAC event – exactly as IMAA does now.  But, it was decided that the best approach was to leave this decision up to the individual but set a minimum discount of $10 to be extended to IMAC members.

Unfortunately in the rush to deal with everything that has happened in IMAC over the last 60 days (new website, new board, etc.), the mass communication with the membership about this required discount amount was overlooked.  It was posted on the web on the Unknown request form (where CDs would see it) but never made it out in a Quick Charge email to members.  For this oversight, we apologize.

CDs and clubs are still completely free to set their overall entry fee as they require.  IMAC certainly does not wish to interfere with this budgetary process.

Logically, a pilot that plans on participating in more than one event in a year would see the advantage in going ahead and joining IMAC.  This gains them not just the discounted entry fee but provides them full access to all the features and benefits of the website as well as discounted fees to judging schools.  In short, $10 is the point at which the decision to join becomes pretty easy…but not required.

Also, after much discussion, the board decided that, rather than modify the Contest Guidelines to include a specific discount amount, it would be a better and more flexible approach to issue an annual policy statement setting the discount amount.  Additionally, it was also pointed out that many events have been held already and others are planned for the next few weeks.  To eliminate any immediate problem, the board decided to make the policy effective on April 1, 2009.

The search for maximizing the benefits of IMAC membership is never ending.  This particular benefit directly puts money back into the pocket of the IMAC member resulting in a win/win for both the member and the organization.

2009 Contest Discount Policy

All 2009 IMAC events will offer a minimum $10 discount from the regular event fee to all IMAC members in good standing with proof of current membership.  This policy is effective for events after April 1, 2009.

Gentlemen,
Is this discount written in stone? Two years ago we raised the entry fee to $30.00 non-Imac members and $25.00 all member. We have always given Imac members a $5.00 discount. We don't have any prizes to give only good food at a very reasonable price and good flying weather permitting.
As most of us know Imac contest are not really a money making deal we usually break even after plaques food, Bathrooms and field cutting. All contest in the NC region have given a $5.00 discount for Imac members and we really appreciate that and I still pay for my membership with ease.
I know we want to encourage new membership but if we have to charge a potential new member $35.00 to give the Imac member the $10.00 discount we may not have new members with this economy. In our region it's pretty much the same pilots that compete and we are going to fly regaurdless if we have a discount or not.
I don't know how the other CDs feel about this.
As far as the club I'm in they find it hard to give up the field for a weekend and not make something. Personally I don't care if the club makes anything just as long as the contest pays for itself. and We can do it again. Thanks for looking Dan

I disagree guys - I think it will encourage more flyers to join our organization - help grow IMAC ! if it was up to me I would register all Basic class flyers at the lower entry fee until they become hard core - move up in class - join IMAC !

Just go through the registered pilots on this site. Over 90% are IMAC members already. Does the host club want to loose $10 on 90 percent of their entered pilots? NO. So they will just raise the price by $10. At the cactus classic for example. There are 48 pilots register. 41 are IMAC members. That is $410 the club is loosing. Plus they are paying another $144 for championship points.

That is a total expense of $554 to the host club.

Edit

Cactus classic is 50 reg, 44 IMAC members. So that is a $590 expense to the club.

ok I see Tony I know my club cannot take the loss youre right about what will go down with the numbers, we CDs would raise our entry fees $10 then minus $10 for members to not take a loss for the host club. maybe more newbees will join on the spot to not get the surcharge ! then since they're in maybe go to a couple more contests this season and have a good feeling about it

Dave when you get this figured out let me know. I'm about to make up a flyer. Remember we get no budgeting from the club, and we still have to send in $3.00 a head to Imac for plaques at the end of the year.

Sorry, But this policy simply takes money out of the pockets of CDs. The last contest I CD-ed, I was hoping that FEWER IMAC members would show up, so that I could at least break even. I have a hard time charging a non-IMAC member $40 for perhaps 5 flights in two days. If anything, this will drive the contest entry fee up, and discourage new members.

If anything, this is incentive for me to let my IMAC membership lapse so I can ensure that the contest fees I'm paying helps the CD and the club who are hosting me for the weekend.

My $0.02.

Tom
