Above 75 in windy conditions and above 80 in calm conditions seems to be the winning ticket here in NC. One thing is clear, and at the risk of bringing up a sore subject, the rule for forcing advancement may no longer be a factor, given the low turn out for contests this year, at least in this region. That fact has me worried IMAC may not be around long enough for me to advance very far, if I don't make steady progress. This is what got me thinking about moving up. Practicing old Unknowns has helped me win them in contests this year, with the last two scoring above 80%, better than my Knowns! But in the end I think two points made above are key factors: keeping it fun, as opposed to work; and how much pressure others exert to move up. No one wants to compete with a sandbagger! |

Sandbagger has been used to signify someone with an “unfavorable advantage “ in one class due to experience. However, a competitive pilot will consider them as a “standard” to beat. When you beat them you have the option (your choice) to advance to the next level. The “club flyers “ seldom travel to other fields within their region and only wish to compete in their comfort zone. You have beaten the best of your class and should base your decision to move up on your personal preference. Yes, forced moves have caused some pilots to leave IMac, but all “Hobbies” have declined for unknown reasons. It’s all about the “FUN” to me.

I have been flying IMAC for close to a decade. During that time, I have never seen or heard of anyone who has met the criteria of the "Move Up" rule. If you know of anyone who has actually achieved 5 wins with 4 or more comp editors in each event in one season, that person might just meet the definition of a "Sand-bagger".

They changed the criteria for the move up rule, but I believe it’s no longer enforced. If you don’t desire a move to a higher class , stay in Sportsman. IMac May experience less participation in the future, but it will survive. Intermediate class will be there when you’re ready.
