Read Book Ref;
Trying to impress my Father-in-Law I showed him a nickel and asked what was the animal on one side.
He said it's a buffalo. I said no, it's a Bison being the smart ass that I was.
His response: If everyone calls it a Buffalo, then that makes it a Buffalo!.
The message? If enough people call it a "half square loop" it may actually be a "half square loop"?
Just Sayen.

Hey Steve.... I hear you loud and clear. And as Clark alluded to above.... the criteria for a square loop (Family 7) is clear and different from a vertical line (Family 1).

Pilots really can call it what they want as if that is what registers in their mind on the flight line when competing, and as we know, with the judges behind us and knees knocking & mouth dry.... The less distractions we have...the better.

The true situation, though, is that a vertical line (Family 1) does not require entry and exit radii on the ¼ loops to be the same. In addition, the vertical line can have elements on it. On the other hand..... on a square loop, ALL radii have to be the same or a 1 point deduction is applied for each mismatch. In addition elements can ONLY be applied on the horizontal portion of the square loop (Top line if it is up or bottom line if it is down).

So....there is a CLEAR difference between the two families and the reference to "Half Square loop" and the connotations that come with it are stark. I am aware that in pattern, they do have a reference to the "beast" and maybe that was where the reference originated.

I know that you already know the above....however, I wanted our new Basic pilots to be aware of what the difference is and why a "vertical line" should be ingrained in their young minds as they learn and move up in the classes.
Best regards,
Wayne

Thanks Phil, but the real credit belongs to Doug. He is the one who spent countless hours getting the Education section up and running, all I did was throw out a little content.
